The Intergenerational Report (IGR) is a government document that projects the outlook for the economy and budget over the next 40 years. The IGR highlights key spending and tax pressures and is intended to help the Australian Government, Parliament and Australian people to understand long-term challenges for the Budget and the economy. This Guide aims to provide context and understanding of the IGR, giving readers a grounding to better support their engagement with the report.

All chart data, projections, and table contents are from the 2026 and 2023 Intergenerational Reports. A data pack containing the relevant 2026 IGR data used for each chart in this Guide is available. The pack includes a summary of the 2026 IGR’s data on sensitivity analyses for ease of comparison, including an interactive chart in excel.
