The proposal would:
- component 1: provide $50 million over 2 years to establish a national battery collection network to fill gaps in accessible disposal points and keep batteries out of waste streams
- component 2: provide $9 million over 2 years to incentivise safe disposal by funding feasibility studies into a permanent national deposit scheme for batteries and battery-containing products with tangible rewards for safe disposal
- component 3: provide $1 million over 2 years to educate the public with a national advertising campaign on proper battery disposal and the new collection network
- component 4: regulate producer responsibility to fully fund safe collection and recycling for all consumer electronics and battery-containing products, including vapes.
Components 1 – 3 would be non-ongoing, distribute funding evenly over 2 years and include departmental funding within the capped amount. All components would start from 1 July 2026.
