The proposal would provide $2 million in 2026-27 to simplify food labels by reforming ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates and deliver an education campaign to reduce consumer confusion and waste.

The proposal would be non-ongoing and include departmental funding from within the capped amount.

The proposal would start from 1 July 2026.
