The proposal would provide $100 million over 7 years to advance the development of alternative proteins and support a greener, sustainable food system. This would include:

• component 1: $60 million over 7 years to establish cellular agriculture centres of excellence to accelerate research and innovation
• component 2: $20 million over 3 years to coordinate research efforts for a task force linking programs like CSIRO’s Future Protein Mission to other research initiatives
• component 3: $20 million over 3 years to support local businesses to expand operational capacity and build facilities for processing Australian-grown plant proteins.

The proposal would be non-ongoing, distribute funding evenly over the timeframe for each component and include departmental funding from within the capped amounts.

The proposal would start from 1 July 2026.
